Re: Island Park man shoots grizzly in defense-of-life
So sorry, we missed your post until just now! We did not hear of this incident. This was about 15 minutes south of us. We live near Henry's Lake and had a grizzly getting into trash near us a couple of years ago. Fortunately, there were no bear human interactions that we know of. We have seen grizzlies along the road a couple of miles away. But our neighbor's son saw one in early spring out their dining room window walking across from them at the base of the mountain behind us.
There have been at least a half dozen grizzlies killed in Island Park over the last two summers. Part of the problem is that there is no bear-proof trash can ordinance and people leave their garbage out. There is talk of getting a regulation passed, but nothing for sure yet.
We get black bears every fall going after the chokecherries in our little development. This year looks like a decent crop so they should be coming through again. Though we have never seen one as they usually come down at night, we have had scat in our yard and our neighbor had one in her carport. Yikes! So we carry bear spray when we take our evening walks in the fall.
