Wyoming collegiate wrestler Kendell Cummings attempted to pull a grizzly bear off his teammate Brady Lowry when he was attacked Saturday outside of Cody, Wyoming, while the young men were hunting for shed antlers.

The bear then turned and attacked Cummings, according to the Cowboy State Daily.

Wyoming Game and Fish Department officials described the attack as “a sudden, surprise encounter with a grizzly bear.” An investigation is ongoing.

Yes, there are videos on youtube from the hospital room. That was a brave teammate to grab the bear while it was attacking the other kid. The bear didn't expect that. Perhaps that made it a defensive situation for the bear.

Yes, a very brave young man indeed. According to our local newspaper the bear attacked Cummings twice, the second time came after he called out to see if his friend was ok. After initially fighting the bear, Cummings realized those efforts were futile. Fortunately, after lying still the bear left on its own, so it was apparently not a predatory attack. May have been surprised or defending unseen cubs or food.

Wyoming Fish and Game are estimating 6-10 grizzlies in the area according to reports from hunters and ranchers. They are continuing to monitor bear activity in the region and will make "management decisions in the interest of public safety".
