Parks Spring Update--Bears, Wolves, and more

Post by karenandbill »

Glad the site is back up. We have made several trips into the parks and I will give a brief update. I have company right now so no time to post photos, but will try to get some up when I can.

So much snow in April and early May that everything was late. Did see a nice, big grizzly boar close to the road near Blacktail eating on a carcass off and on for about a week. There have been other grizzlies, mostly in Lamar, but we had a smaller sow with two tiny cubs near Hellroaring this past week. Super cute!!! Also, a sow with 2 COYS just south of Dragons Mouth in Hayden.

Last week we went into the Tetons and just missed seeing 399 with her new cub. So glad she made it! Today, May 20, we had better luck in seeing the
Beryl spring sow (who is now collared) with 2 new cubs climbing the rocky hillside on the east side of the river. It was great to see her and the cubs seemed to be in great shape. So hopefully, they make it this year.

The Junction Butte wolves have a den once again by Slough creek and we have seen the females and several others a couple of times. We will head back out this next week and hopefully see puppies.

We have also seen foxes, coyotes, moose, bighorns, goats, black bears, etc. The snow is quickly melting because of the warm weather with some snow still in the shade and the high country. Unfortunately there has been a smoky haze the last couple of days due to fires in Alberta and BC. Earliest we have ever had a smoke problem. Hopefully it doesn't last. Visitation is starting to pick up.

We'll update with pictures and more when we get a chance.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you've seen a lot! We heard about 399 and hope we might catch a glimpse of her when we go up there. Hope you enjoy great times with your visitors. And really appreciate the report!

Thank you for the trip report Bill! Especially about the news on the Beryl Springs sow and her COYS! She is our favorite bear in the park, and we are getting ready to leave for our only trip to the park this year. We really want to see her, and appreciate the good news about her and her COY's!

Thank you Bill!!!!
