Phantom Lake Sow and her one-year old cubs

Post by Nikon_nerd »

A few images of a new grizzly sow we'd never seen before. She was referred to as "Phantom Lake" sow on other forums, so I'll just use that. We saw her several times during our two week visit.

All comments welcome.

Thanks Rick. Yes, this was the second day we saw them, and they stayed close to the road most of the day.

We have seen her for a couple of years now and got some pretty good shots, or at least so I thought until I saw yours. They are magnificent!!! She seems to like to stand up quite a bit and you captured those poses perfectly. Thanks for sharing.

Bill,

We had never seen grizzlies in this area before, and we were pleasantly surprised to see her and her cubs several times during out visit this year. We were mainly trying to see Obsidian and Beryl, but they weren't cooperating, so we we very happy to see this "new sow for us", and yes, she does like to stand up a lot, much more than any other sow we've seen before.

Thanks for your comments!!!

Jeff, yes the first time we saw her we were surprised as well with the location--typically a black bear hangout. We were also surprised of the tolerance for people and the proximity to the road. Don't know where she learned that behavior. Anyway, we are glad to have another bear that provides for us the opportunity to see these magnificent animals.
