Elk Hunt Begins in Grand Teton National Park

I was surprised to learn last year that every fall there is a sanctioned elk hunt in Grand Teton National Park. Hunting in a national park??? What's up with that? We feed 'em on the elk refuge so we can go shoot them. It makes no sense. It's not like there isn't plenty of places in the surrounding n...

Just a Fun Day in the Park Oct. 31

With the days dwindling to the closing of the west entrance, we decided to head to Lamar one last time. We were hoping to see the Junction Butte wolves and then do some hiking. As we got to Little America, (before Slough Creek) the scopes were out, so we got ours out (not a Swarovsky, unfortunately)...

Wolf Illegally Shot in Grand Teton

It's bad enough that they are shot indiscriminately outside the park, they are illegally killed inside the park as well. Besides the moral, ethical, and ecosystem issues, it would be wise for the people of this region to see the huge economic benefit that comes from having wolves around. https://www...

Wandering Wapitis

On Wednesday mid-afternoon we decided to take a drive into Hayden Valley to see if the Wapiti wolves were visible. The roads were still very slick in a few spots with ice from snowmelt and refreezing. But we made it over OK. As we were driving into Canyon, there was a coyote in the field. Just befor...

Re: Snow, snow, 610, Yellowstone and GT hikes Oct 17-23

Loved the pine grosbeak -- I've never seen one. This was the first time for us, a life bird. We saw the female first and she is pretty in her own right, but we didn't know what she was until we saw the male and Bill figured it out. They were really enjoying the berries and let us get remarkably clo...

Snow, snow, 610, Yellowstone and GT hikes Oct 17-23

We did a rather lengthy trip report on Saturday with details of our hikes and roadside views. We took a couple of breaks during the posting. When we finished, and pushed submit we lost it all. We were logged out and when we logged back in, it was all gone. Very frustrating. So after brooding o...

Re: Yellowstone/GT Oct. 1-6

Dorothy, Wow! What a great trip. We are so glad you got to see 399 and her quads as well as all the other stuff. 399 is actually looking better lately than she was earlier in the summer. For all 4 cubs to have survived and look so good is a true testament to her abilities as a mother. Sure hope she ...

Junction Wolves Sat. Sept 26

We woke up to rain Saturday morning which was a great relief. It helped clear out the smoke and give us some much needed moisture. But that changed our plans from heading to the Tetons and hiking our favorite trail. So instead, we headed out to Lamar to see if the wolves were still visible. We arriv...

Re: Park Still Seeing Heavy Traffic

We woke to rain this morning, what a blessing! The air is fresh and clean. Since the radar showed heavier rain in the Tetons, we changed plans and went to Lamar to see the Junctions and they were out! If I get a chance, I'll post a trip report. Anyway, the park was crowded but not nearly as bad as I...
