Re: New member intro

Tom, bear spray comes with neo sleeve and loop. I simply hook the sleeve to chest strap on backpack. Works perfect, in split second can draw it on ready. I heard Costco in Bozeman had 2 pack for $39.00, about half price than in Park or elsewhere. Please don't get too spooked by YST bear possibilitie...

Re: New member intro

Hi Tom welcome to Forums and hope you have a great Aug visit. I too am a solo YST hiker for 15 yrs. Great advice by fellow posters. I restrict my visits to spring and late fall, so can't comment much about Aug. But Solo hiking comments, whether you go in 1 mile or 10 miles all equally apply. Bear sp...

Bacon Rind fire affect

Hiking NW Gallatin trails are some of my favorites, Black Butte, Fawn Pass, Specimen Crk etc. I will be in third week May. I passed by when Bacon Rind was still smoldering. I suspect lot wildlife driven out of Lee Metcalf and perhaps relocate across 191 into areas as fire did not cross hwy 191. For ...

Re: Breaking News.... NO GRIZZLY HUNT! Grizzly Bears Protected again....

I'll just be straight up with my strong viewpoint , without political influence or bias either side. How 700 to 750 of "anything" much less once near eradicated grizzly, could be declared as "Recovered." Then introduce state self described "Trophy Grizzly Hunting" .....twice yearly for a rug......ma...

Re: Hiking (June) with good wildlife sighting opportunities

I'm an avid solo day hiker and also some 10_12 mile backcountry hikes on and off trails. Around 25 trails except SW quad. Would not leave ANY TH w/o bear spray in quick draw position. I Will be in and around Yst mid/late May, my favorite productive time for bears. Mid June shouldn't be too much of p...

Re: Visiting in May

Probably not. They will close the roads if it snows very much. I agree with Steve. My 15 years visits , used standard car rental no problems. May is most often when I visit for hiking and bear photography. Travel great deal with very few road concerns. If snow should become issue, I stay away from ...

Re: Visiting in May

Spike, welcome and safe travels. As you have only 3days and wildlife viewing is your focus, several areas will be best opportunity. For bison best area is Lamar Valley. Also, though maybe a tad early is Madison River on west entrance road. Look for newborn calves in herd. Hayden valley also good. Ch...

Re: Autumn Visit

Glad you are back! I was in YNP early past October , took a day to Tetons and hiked Two Ocean trail. Rare beautiful sunny day 68+ dgr, windy day. Aspen's were still ablaze! Elk bugling and in forest a fox hearing squirrel chatter next to us, trotted 20 ft .Then....... oops 🦊! Didn't spot bears, but ...
